School shooting today: 19 Killed in ‘Trail of Horror’ at Texas Elementary School

The attack brought back memories of the 2012 attack on an Texas elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

Rob Elementary teaches second, third, and fourth grade students in Uvalde, which is about 85 miles west of San Antonio.

Governor Greg Abbott said the shooter was believed to have been killed while responding to law enforcement.

The shooting started around 11:32 a.m.

State Sen. Roland Gutierrez said 18 children and three adults were killed based on a briefing by state police, he told the Associated Press.

"My heart is broken today," Superintendent Hal Harrell said tearfully during a news conference Tuesday evening.

"We are a small community and we need your prayers to get through this."

Abbott and other officials said the 18-year-old shooter went to Uvalde's Rob Elementary School at around 11:30 a.m. Central Time and opened fire.

Abbott said the shooter was likely killed by responding to police and was carrying a handgun and possibly a rifle.
